ABO Incompatible Kidney Transplantation in India

ABO-incompatible transplantation is a process of organ transplantation that permits more efficient use of the available organs regardless of the ABO blood type. This kind of treatment is mainly for young people or infants. In an ABO transplant, the donor’s and the patient’s blood type is not compatible. Experienced doctors at Max Hospital, India perform ABO transplants for those who require it.

ABO Incompatible Transplantation - An Advancement

The antibodies in the patient’s blood react to the donor’s blood type. This reaction would result in an unsuccessful transplant. This is why, in the past, the only option was to identify the type of blood group of the donor and patient and see if it matched. Otherwise, surgery was not possible. Advancement in medicine and technology has made it possible for transplants to happen between some recipients and donors, even if the blood type does not match, which was not possible earlier. This option has increased the availability of transplant options and, at the same time, has reduced the number of patients on the waiting list. Medical treatment is required to be given to the patient before and after the ABO transplant to lower the antibody level in the blood and hence reducing the chances that the antibodies reject the donor’s kidney.

Precautions

The following things need to be kept in mind when you have a transplant:
  1. Manage high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes
  2. Maintain a healthy weight
  3. Reduce the risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
  4. Keep appropriate red blood cell count.
  5. Take care of your diet and eat healthily
  6. Drink lots of water
  7. Reduce the risk of cancer and infection
  8. Take all the prescribed medications on time.

Treatment

The treatment involves the following process:
  1. The process of plasmapheresis includes the removal of the antibodies from the blood
  2. Injecting antibodies in the body protects the patient from suffering from infections. This  process is termed intravenous immunoglobulin.
  3. Other medications are provided to the patient to make sure that the new kidney is protected from the antibodies.
