Hepatitis B

The virus can spread through several ways like that of blood transfusion or from mother to child during pregnancy or from other bodily fluids. Hepatitis B infection ultimately leads to liver cirrhosis.

Hepatitis C virus

Hepatitis C infection can cause serious liver damage. The virus is transmitted through contact with an infected person's blood or body fluids. There are many forms of the hepatitis C virus or HCV. But if a person who is affected by AIDS or is an alcoholic, then it can rapidly degrade their liver health. At Max Hospitals, treatment services for Hepatitis C Virus include oral medicines called "directly acting antivirals (DAA)" that aids in clearing the infection and prevent liver damage

Non Alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)

It is the condition which arises out of long-standing diabetes and obesity. It is a progressive condition in which the liver damage starts with "fatty liver" and ends with cirrhosis. It is caused generally due to poor lifestyle choices and NASH also increases the chance of liver cirrhosis.

Hepatoblastoma is a malignant liver tumour of childhood. At Max Hospitals, our team of expert surgeons specializes in treating Liver Resection (surgically removing the tumour) when the disease is limited & Liver transplantation is ideal in cases with limited tumour burden in the background of chronic liver disease. We have introduced less invasive treatment modalities llike Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), Microwave ablation, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Liver Transplant in children

The common indications for liver transplant in children include primarily chronic liver disease and secondary, due to biliary atresia and metabolic liver diseases such as Wilson's disease, PFIC, congenital acidurias. Although several complications may arise due to liver transplant among which the most dangerous is the rejection of the new liver by the body's immune system. Although it can be controlled through immunosuppressants, it also reduces the natural immune response of the body which makes it prone to other diseases.

Living donor liver transplant

In this procedure, the diseased liver of the patient is removed totally and is replaced with a part of a healthy liver taken from a healthy person who is a close relative of the patient. Liver transplant is a curative treatment with a success rate reaching 95% when performed timely. The liver regenerates in the donor body within 5-6 weeks to its normal size. But sometimes the donor is at risks of bleeding, bile leaks or blood clots and sometimes even hernia.

ABO Incompatible Liver Transplantation

Liver transplant happens between people having the same blood group. But when a blood group compatible donor is not available, liver transplantation can be successfully performed with a donor whose blood group is different from that of the recipient. This is called ABO-incompatible liver transplant. It requires measurement of antibody levels in the recipient blood against the donor blood group antigens and bringing down these antibody levels using medications. At Max Hospitals, we have the best liver transplant experts who specialize in performing ABO Incompatible Liver Transplant by using procedures such as plasma exchange and immunoadsorption.

Combined Liver and Kidney Transplant

Combined transplant of both liver and kidney is required in patients suffering from end-stage liver and kidney disease. It can be performed as a single procedure when it is called "Simultaneous liver-kidney transplant" or sequentially i.e. liver transplant first followed by kidney transplant a few weeks later.

Artificial Liver Support – MARS

MARS (Molecular adsorbent recirculating system) is a form of artificial liver support therapy or a form of liver dialysis that is best used as a bridge to liver transplant in critically ill patients awaiting a liver transplant.

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic shunt (TIPS)

This is a minimally invasive procedure that is useful in the treatment of uncontrolled variceal bleeding or uncontrolled ascites in patients with chronic liver disease. The procedure uses the help of imaging guidance so that the doctors can connect the hepatic vein with the portal vein in the liver. Then a small metal device known as a stent is placed to keep the connection open and allows the blood draining from the bowel back to the patient's heart bypassing the liver.

Surgery for diseases of the biliary system

Our experts specialize in the techniques required for radical cholecystectomy for cancer of the gall bladder in which a part of the liver is removed in the surgery and Cancers of the bile ducts..
